Reno Omokri Slams Nnamdi Kanu Over N50bn Defamation Suit

Former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has vehemently criticized the N50 billion defamation lawsuit filed against him by Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), at the Enugu High Court. Omokri described the suit as “frivolous” and “an abuse of court processes,” expressing confidence that it would be dismissed.

The suit arose after Omokri publicly alleged on social media that Kanu and IPOB were responsible for the killing of soldiers, police officers, and other security personnel, as well as various acts of violence linked to so-called unknown gunmen. These statements, Omokri insists, are grounded in documented evidence including voice recordings and social media posts.

In his writ of summons, Kanu condemned these allegations as false, baseless, prejudicial, and defamatory, claiming that they unfairly portrayed him as a criminal and terrorist, thereby damaging his reputation. Through his brother, Emmanuel Kanu, Nnamdi Kanu sought a court order compelling Omokri to issue a public apology and retract the statements in two national newspapers and on his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter). Kanu also demanded N10 billion in aggravated damages for the alleged malicious publication.

Responding to the lawsuit in an interview with Sunday PUNCH, Omokri rejected the allegations and refused to be intimidated. He argued that linking Kanu to violence is not defamatory, given Kanu’s own public statements and actions. Omokri highlighted that IPOB is officially designated a terrorist organization by the Nigerian government and recalled a broadcast by Kanu on Radio B
