Life is Brutally Unfair to Nigeria Police Force – Omoyele Sowore Reacts to President Tinubu’s $100,000 Gift to Super Falcons

Publisher and activist Omoyele Sowore has voiced strong criticism over the disparity in treatment between Nigeria’s celebrated Super Falcons football team and the men of the Nigeria Police Force. His remarks came following President Bola Tinubu’s generous reward of $100,000 (approximately N150 million) and housing to each member of the Super Falcons after their triumphant win at this year’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), marking Nigeria’s 10th title victory.

Sowore expressed his frustration on social media, highlighting the stark contrast between the rewards given to the female footballers and the insufficient benefits enjoyed by police officers who have dedicated their lives to protecting the nation. He pointed out that while the Super Falcons trained for a year and competed for a month before receiving substantial financial rewards and homes, police officers have faithfully served for decades — often up to 35 years — only to retire with a meager gratuity of around $1,500 (N2 million), no housing, limited medical benefits, and a small pension.

In his post, Sowore lamented the neglect faced by retired police personnel, many of whom recently protested in Abuja demanding overdue pension and gratuity payments. He contrasted their plight with the lavish benefits enjoyed by political leaders such as the President and Governors, who receive billions in gratuity, lifetime pensions, multiple homes, and comprehensive medical care.

Sowore’s comments underscore the longstanding grievances among Nigeria’s police force concerning inadequate welfare and recognition, raising questions about the nation’s prioritization of support for its different sectors. His call to address the inequalities reflects a broader demand for fairness and justice for those who serve on the front lines of national security yet remain underserved by government policies.
